Here are some of my suggestions for making good backgrounds that i found work the best.
1.) Make the file size as small as possible so your profile will load faster, cause the larger the image is the slower it will make your page load.
2.) following AutumnsList suggestion from their "Getting Started Tips" (found on the left), the best image size to cover the whole page should be around 1200x800 pixels (width x height). If your using little pics so you can cascade them, then I guess any size will do, but I found that it seems to look best at around 300x300 pixels.
3.) If you can, you should "fade or overlay the image" so it doesn't look to bright on the page. This will let you use more font colors and it will also let people see the words on the page.
You can do this using a program like photo shop or Gimp, Gimp will work in windows or Linux and it's FREE, just google it.
